— Ik heb besloten om van ‘The Dutch Woods’ een categorie te maken. Part1 is te vinden in het bericht ‘Contradicties‘. In de titel zit ironie, want in Nederland zijn eigenlijk geen echte ‘Woods’. Globaal gezien is de natuur in Nederland in te delen in 2 categorieën: beschermde natuurgebieden, die nog redelijk ‘wild’, doch onderhouden zijn; en aangelegde natuurgebieden, die bedacht zijn, en vaak een recreatieve functie hebben in de buurt van wat grotere steden. Over deze laatste categorie gaat ‘The Dutch Woods’.
— Spreadsheet-natuur noemde ik het bij Part1. Om de 10 meter een reageerbuisboompje in de grond; en om de 10 reageerbuisboompjes een zitbank-met-prullenbak; en om de 5 zitbanken een picknicktafel. Alles beheerst en netjes op een rij. Maar ondanks de afkeer die in deze woorden spreekt, is er ook iets dat me fascineert aan deze structuur-natuur. Ik denk dat dit komt omdat er in mij ook een soortgelijke tegenstrijdigheid zit. Aan de ene kant ruig, ongeremd, vrij willen zijn; maar aan de andere kant half onbewust vast zitten aan laat ik zeggen Calvinistische ingeramdheden. Wellicht is dit ook wel iets typisch Nederlands.

— ‘The Dutch Woods’ is becoming a category. Part 1 is in the message ‘Contradicties‘. There is some irony in this title because there are no real Woods in The Netherlands. We have 2 categories of nature: protected nature (which is ‘kept wild’) and constructed nature (often as recreation-grounds, near big cities). The Dutch Woods is about this second category.
— Spreadsheet-nature I called it in part1. Every 10 meters a test-tube-tree; and every 10 test-tube-trees a bench-with-garbage-bin. Everything well controlled and in a straight line. But although there is some dislike in these words, there is also something that fascinates me in this structure-nature. Maybe because there is some of this contradiction in myself. On the one hand wanting to be rough, untamed, free; but on the other hand, half unconscious, being stuck to, let’s say, Calvinistic teachings. Maybe typical Dutch too.

Het is 24 november en in Zutphen lopen allemaal sinterklazen door de stad. Ik heb nog flink wat tijd voordat ik bij m’n zus verwacht word. Ik stap op m’n Brompton en voor ik het weet fiets ik langs de rivier De IJssel. Die ken ik wel. Mijn geboortestad Deventer ligt er ook aan. Het is bewolkt en vochtig; maar helaas niet meer zo mistig als toen ik vanochtend vertrok uit Den Haag.

It’s 24th of November and Zutphen is crowded with Saint Nicolas-es. I have some time and before I know I am cycling along the IJssel-river. I know it. I was born near this river, in Deventer. It is cloudy and humid; but unfortunately not as foggy anymore as when I left The Hague this morning.

Afgelopen vrijdag. Achter in de middag. Met vriend een stuk van het laarzenpad in een aangelegd recreatiegebied net buiten Diemen gewandeld en gefotografeerd.

Last Friday, late in the afternoon. We walked a piece of the ‘bootspath’ in a recreation-ground just outside Diemen; and of course made Photo’s.

Nature Exposed

Van 2 september tot 7 oktober exposeerde Noorderlicht haar 19e Internationale Fotomanifestatie ‘Terra Cognita’ in Friesland. Thema: de relatie tussen mens en natuur. Een prima, inspirerende expositie waar de 115 deelnemende fotografen het thema op zeer verschillende; eigenzinnige manieren hadden benaderd. Een deel van het werk werd buiten getoond op een spontaan, chaotische balkenconstructie.

From 2 September till 7 October Noorderlicht exposed her 19th International Photo-exhibition ‘Terra Cognita’ in Friesland. Theme was: the relation between men and nature. A fine, inspiring exhibition. Part of the work was shown outside on a spontaneous, chaotic beam-construction.

Contradicties

— Het was grauw en guur die zondag. En ik had de schurft in. Fietsen is dan het beste; ver en hard fietsen. Fototoestel in de tas, maar alleen voor speciale gevallen, want anders komt er niets van ver fietsen. Ergens boven Leidschendam reed ik langs een recreatieplas, toen mijn aandacht werd getrokken door de begroeiing langs de oever een eind verderop. Het was vooral de natuurvreemde, gestructureerde monotonie en de gelaagdheid die me aansprak. Typisch Nederlandse spreadsheet-natuur. Normaal is dat niet de natuur die mijn interesse heeft; maar de grauwe monotonie paste op dat moment wel bij m’n gemoedstoestand.
— Ook heb ik wel iets met contradicties. In dit geval de contradictie tussen natuur en rationele structuur. Hier nog een paar contradictie-shots.

–It was a dreary Sunday afternoon. And I was in a huff. Cycling is the best thing one can do then; far and hard. I took my camera; but only for special occasions; otherwise I would forget to cycle. Somewhere above Leidschendam my attention was drawn by a row of trees a bit further ahead. It were the unnatural, structured monotony and the layering that appealed to me. Typical Dutch spreadsheet-nature. Normally that is not the kind of nature that I like; but the Grey monotony suited my state of mind quite well that moment.
– I also like contradictions. In this case the contradiction between nature and rational structure. Here some more contradiction-shots.

Afgelopen woensdag, achter in de middag. Fris, met lekker laag zonlicht. Ik was met ‘one of my best friends’ en we liepen via het Malieveld naar het Haagse Bos. De zonnestralen grepen de herfst en de gevallen bladeren vatten vlam. Foto’s gemaakt tot we dorst kregen in een biertje.

Last Wednesday late in the afternoon in The Hague. It was fresh, with very low sunlight. The sunbeams grabbed the fall and set the leaves on fire. We made photo’s till we got thirsty for a beer.
