In his holidays, my son and I visited the Louwmanmuseum. It’s a museum with old cars and everything related to them. If you ever come to The Hague; and love cars, then this is the place to be.

Sweet Bokeh

Sweet Bokeh | SONY A7 | SONY Zeiss FE 55mm. f/1.8 | 1/2500 | F2.5 | ISO 100

This Wednesday I had the opportunity to play around with two SONY-Zeiss lenses on my brand new A7; thanks to a good friend. The first lens is the SONY Zeiss FE 55mm. f/1.8; and the 2nd one is the very small/light SONY Zeiss FE 35mm. f/2.8. I wanted to see how good they are, compared to my faithful Zeiss 50mm. f/2 ZF.2. Well, to make it quick: Both are very good lenses; designed for the ‘awful-lot-of-megapixels-sensors’ of today; and therefore slightly better than my 50mm. manual lens. So, I’ll have to sell something I love …

Two almost the same shots with the 55mm. and the 35mm.. Both are very sharp, but for me the 55mm. has the better bokeh.

Silent Disco

Silent Disco | Nikon D700 | Nikkor 24-70mm. f/2.8G ED | 70mm. | 1/640 | F2.8 | ISO 400

In Portfolio I published the theme Essence today. In this theme I tell a bit more about what fascinates me in trying to capture the essence of things.

The photo on top is a good example. I took it on a Festival at an activity called ‘Silent Disco’. People were disco-dancing with headphones on, in a music-less, silent room. Pretty weird. Without a headphone on you were definitely an outsider. After some shots of dancing people, who could only have visual contact with each other, I started to wonder: what is the crux of what is happening here. For me it was ‘Silence’. But how do you capture silence. And then there was that unexpected, senseless moment. A woman was standing in a dark corner of the room. The light touched the profile of her face. The rest was pretty dark, with a window in the background with a black lace curtain. In the computer I enhanced the contrast of the white face profile against the dark background; and I made the headphone a bit more visible. And then I got the feeling that I had captured the essence of ‘Silent Disco’.
