Architectuur is voor mij een beetje een beladen onderwerp vanwege voormalige, beroepsmatige betrokkenheid. Als je er middenin zit worden plaatjes van de buitenkant minder interessant. Ik vind het tegenwoordig leuker om Architectuur te beleven; er in te zijn, dan om er een lading foto’s van te maken. Vroeger ging ik echt gebouwen fotograferen terwijl het me nu meer gaat om details; mooie oplossingen; de werking van bepaalde gemaakte keuzes; of juist de absurditeit daarvan. Het kan tegenwoordig ook gewoon een oud krot; een weinig spectaculair kerkje op een verstild plekje; of een rijtje kassen zijn. Kortom: het gaat steeds meer om de foto zelf, dan om de Architectuur die erop staat.

Architecture is a delicate matter for me. I used to work for more than 20 years in architecture. When you’re in the middle of it, pictures of the outside become less important. Years ago I went out to make photo’s of buildings I liked. Now I like to experience architecture, rather than take a lot of photo’s of it. Now I like a good concept; fine details and solutions; good choices or the absurdity of it. It also doesn’t have to be big anymore. A small church; an old shed or a row of greenhouses is good enough. And: today it’s more about the photo, than about the architecture in it.

The first 2 shots are from the best thing I ever did in architecture. The main stairs of the Gasunion headquarters in Groningen. The main goal was to design an organic, moving stairs; that followed the turn of a part of a spiral.
