Mexico from Slides prt11: Oaxaca

Oaxaca de Juárez

Oaxaca de Juárez

Oaxaca is the name of a State as well as a City. The State is officially named: “The Free and Sovereign State of Oaxaca”; and the City is it’s capital; officially named: “Oaxaca de Juárez”. First thing that I remembered about Oaxaca were it’s long, straight streets; arranged in a tight, orthogonal structure. On one of those straight streets our bus was held by a couple of policeman. They talked to our driver for a while. Just when I started to get irritated, our travel-guide explained that the busdriver was accused of a traffic violation, which he did not make… Then she came along to collect some money, because our driver could not pay the penalty… When they had collected the cash, the policemen left the bus, giving us their greetings. On moments like that, I have fantasies about a good gun…

The Hotels we visited were sober but good for a sleep. That’s how I like them. The Hotel-people were hospitable and friendly. In this Hotel in Oaxaca one of our trip-members had his anniversary. A traditional ‘Piñata’ was arranged . Blindfolded he had to smash his present with a stick and when he succeeded, sweets rained all over him…

On our walk through the streets of Oaxaca, my wife and me sneaked in a much larger Hotel, to see what we were missing…

In the evening we had a diner with the whole group under the arcades of the central Zócalo. The place was crowded with musicians who tried to lure the ladies to let them play a song at their table for some money. There were also very young kids with red eyes, begging for a Peso in exchange for a little, colourful bracelet.
